NeXTstation RISC Prototype

Overview

Around the year 1991 NeXT inc. developed a Motorola 88110-based prototype NeXTstation. Shipment was targeted for the beginning of 1992. It was based on an 40MHz 88110 MPU, supposed to have 12MB of RAM and an 100MB harddrive and should have been sold at the price of the competing 68040 design. Several of the DSPs of previous models were planned to be left out, since the 88110 could handle parts of this task directly, though there were plans to integrate the Motorola 96002 compression chip nevertheless on the mainboard.
